Fog Over the Channel

Michael Imlay · Dummy copy for layout · April 12, 2026

The pier was a sentence that never reached its period. Dummy copy: boards, one lamp, a channel that had decided to keep its ships.

California fog is not weather so much as a cover story. It arrives from the west with the confidence of something that has done this before. On this sample night the Santa Barbara Channel put a white lid on its own lights and left the pilings to argue with the tide.

A fieldtrip would wait for morning. An essay can stand in the wet and take notes. The lamp makes a coin of light the size of a dinner plate. Everything past that is rumor — a horn, maybe, or the memory of a horn.

The water does not hide the past. It files it where cameras refuse to focus.

If this page were finished, the middle would be steamships, a timetable, a name painted on a hull that the fog has already erased. For now it is here to show the column: title, still, pull quote, a still that behaves like evidence.

Walk back up the boards. Don’t turn around. The lamp will still be on. I’m Michael Imlay — sample sign-off, same as the films, just slower.
